Doughnut SmackDown
STL for the fail! World’s Fair Doughnuts is closed through the 1st leaving St. Louis Do-Nut to compete with SF’s own Doughnut World. Walking into Do-Nut on Southwest Ave in St. Louis was like walking into a Steinbeck novel. I could not bring myself to order coffee for fear that the crone would offer me creme. I appreciated their attempt to bring the mysteries of doughnut making to the front of the shop but their rusty broken equipment did not inspire confidence. Neither did the fact that their filler was broken so the boston creme and jellies were all cut in half hollowed out and smushed back together. Doughnut Worlds Doughnuts may be made in the back, but at least their shop does not feel like an industrial scrap heap. STL Do-Nut did win points when they iced and sprinkled a couple of cake doughnuts that had been sitting forlornly in the display upon request.
